Discover Your Future
Eskom Expo for Young Scientists
Our Vision is to
Inspire Young Scientists and Researchers
Our Mission is to
Develop Young Scientists
who are able to identify a problem, analyse information, find solutions and communicate findings effectively
The Eskom Expo Video Competition
Are you in grades 4 to 12?
We want to see you conduct your experiments or build your prototypes.
Your project must be in any of our 24 categories and follow the expo guidelines
Competition Closes: 20 July 2018[Click here for more details]
Eskom Expo for Young Scientists brings together learners, teachers, professional organisations and educational bodies and government institutions from all over the world.
Learners will increase their awareness
of the wonders of science and engineering,
add to their knowledge and explore
while broadening their scientific horizons.
Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is an exposition, or science fair, where students have a chance to show others their projects about their own scientific investigations.
By participating at expo students will increase their awareness of the wonders of science, add to their knowledge and broaden their scientific horizons.
Annually, at the prestigious Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF), selected students from 35 Expo Regions in South Africa compete against the best young scientists from around the country and around the world. How to Enter
At ISF 2017, students took home bursaries to study locally and internationally, cash and other exciting prizes, including an honour to represent the country at other international science fairs
International Fair Participants
Proud of our Learners!!
Recently many of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists ISF 2017 winners participated in global international fairs. With many winners and excellent scientific representation they made our country proud.
The best Expo projects are not always complicated, but imaginative and well executed
A good Expo project is often:
A clever solution to a problem
A new approach/ methodology to an existing solution
An insight into social behaviour
An innovation with entrepreneurial possibilities
Where it all starts
Look around you and think of a problem,
What do you want to understand/change?
How can you research this topic?
Find a solution to the problem
Develop a Research Plan
- What - state the problem statement / variables
- Why - significance of the research
- How - method you will use to find a solution/ sample size / resources
- When - time frame of the research
Consider ethical issues and -
Conduct your scientific investigation
Types of Projects
An investigation is a project where the problem, or answer to a question, is solved. When undertaking an investigation, a method is followed that allows for the testing of an idea, or finding a solution to a problem, which determines a clear conclusion to the problem or question asked.
Pure science focuses on learning more about the world we live in by improving our knowledge at a fundamental and basic level. Little or no regard is given to applying this knowledge to practical applications. Pure scientists conduct experiments or studies to test scientific hypotheses and develop theories. An important aspect of this experimentation involves identifying variables and, where possible, controlling them.
Technology and applied technology is the application of pure and applied science knowledge to meet a specific user need, most often in an industrial or commercial setting. Brilliant innovation and invention is less important, rather a systematic method for user need identification as well as technology or knowledge application to meet the need. A good project would demonstrate the development of a useful technology using a system design, build and test process.

TECHNOLOGY AND APPLIED TECHNOLOGY
An engineering project should state the engineering goals, development process and the evaluation of improvements.
These often involve creating and writing new algorithms to solve a problem or improve on an existing algorithm. Simulations, models or “virtual reality”.
COMPUTER SCIENCE PROJECTS
These involve proofs, solving equations, etc. Mathematics is the language of science and is used to explain existing phenomena or prove new concepts and ideas.
Report Your findings
TOPIC / PROBLEM
It is important to be clear about your research topic or the problem being addressed. Why this is important and what is the impact of addressing this topic or problem?
Must include a literature review section. The hypothesis and variables must be properly stated
METHOD / PROCEDURE
Concise description of scientific procedure followed in your study
Explain and analyse your results
Discuss your findings. Is it solving your problem? Is it adding to the knowledge base of the field? Explain the significance.
Link to hypothesis. What is your conclusion
List the most important references (e.g. science journal articles, books, Internet sites) that were used to get information about the topic. This information must be referred to in the introduction.
